Scientific (or academic) books, written in a question-and-answer style, picmonics, and mnemonics are all popular tools for aiding memory in medical education. They are of particular benefit in psychiatry, due to the fact that the theoretical framework of this field, as in the currently applied psychiatric diagnostic criteria (for example, as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fifth edition (DSM-5), published by the American Psychiatric Association), makes recall more difficult. While mnemonics were included in earlier versions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) (Short et al., 1992), only few appear in other literature on a broader range of DSM-IV disorders, etc. However, the use of picmonics tends to occur in scattered and disorganized efforts, despite their effectiveness for enabling complex information to be condensed into pictures with very little text, thereby making memorization easier.
